Ruby, the red variety of corundum, is one of the world's most
valuable gemstones. The name ruby comes from the Latin
rubeus (red). A ruby's color is due to a trace of chromic
oxide; the amount of this substance determines the depth of color.
Because of its hardness and durability, ruby is an excellent choice
for all types of jewelry.
Rubies are believed to have great powers. It's been said that
owning a ruby will ensure a peaceful, harmonious, and healthy
life. Ruby is also believed to control one's passions and thoughts.
To many people, its stimulating color represents heat, life, and
power.
